“You are…” For the first time in her life, Jewel felt her eyes water up. She stared at the ground below her to blink them away. She was possibly angrier than she ever had been before, but more than that, she was lost.
“You are an insult to everything I believe in.” Her legs finally gave out from standing so long, but she controlled her fall, and settled herself back down on the ground.

Sheik watched her sink to the ground, feeling fairly smug with himself. His anger and detestation for himself had suddenly vanished, replaced by a smug feeling of triumph. He was sick of this mare and her refusal; to receive help from anyone. Walking so that he was standing over her, he announced,
"Yes, indeed, but memory is past and the present situation must be dealt with now. For the first time in your life, you are faced with a difficulty which you cannot solve by your own hooves, therefore, you must ask for the assistance of others."

“Normally stallions just try to charm me, but I don’t know what you’re are doing.” She raised her head to stare him in the eye, “But I do know that what you’re doing is only proving yourself untrustworthy. So just leave! You’ll find no answers here! You’ll find no satisfaction here! You’ve already destroyed enough so just leave this place in peace! I am not hiding any feelings or trying to deceive or, or trick you, take yourself away from here!” She was shouting at him now, ears laid back, whites showing in her eyes, and teeth bared.

Sheik laughed,
"You don't understand, foolish mare, I have tried to charm you, you ran from me. I came to woo you and rejected me. I came to run after you, but you fled before me. What other option is there left to me? To let you lie here to be found by some murderous beast and devoured when I am away? How would that be even remotely chivalrous?" He stopped and looked at her.
"So, in answer to your second question, or should I say, command, I shall not be leaving this spot under any circumstance, unless, of course, it would please you to come with me back to Scorpio Cove."

“You don’t know the meaning of chivalrous,” she seethed, “It means more than doing what is written as right. It means more than helping every single horse you think needs help.” She paused, “It means knowing when you’re needed, and when you’re being a damn son of a bitch.” She breathed heavily like she had run the all Triple Crown races in one day, vocals vibrating dangerously.
(Sorry its short, but it sounded better short.)

Sheik snorted loudly and rudely.
"Alright, bitch." He said, without hesitation. "Have it your way. I'll be waiting for morning--right here." He said, walking over to stand underneath a sheltering tree and then turning to smile at her. "If this must be a battle of wills, then so be it. There was silence for a moment when Sheik didn't say anything. Then he said, rathing tauntingly,
"This situation works out rather splendidly, don't you think? I get to stay here and make sure nothing happens to you and you get to have me standing right here, right in earshot so that you can throw insults at me all night." He sblack personed and shook his bay head.

Black Jewel just glared, the fire of her soul begging to go and rip his heart out, but her physical body wouldn’t allow it. She lay her head down on the hard rocks, being able to fall asleep quite quickly, since she was used to it. She dreamed, but not her usual dreams. Her usual dreams were nightmares, of that one night. But now, her dream reminded her of something that had happened a long time ago, to the only time she had been truly happy.
“Race you to the top!”
“You’re on!”
The two foals jubilantly leapt over stones, and raced up the steep side of the hill. Laughing and breathing heavily, but still in the heat of the race, they swept fast trough the grounds of Celestial Night. As always, Black Jewel won.
“Hey Shadow! Take a look at this!” The blue roan colt trudged the few meters to where she was standing, slightly humiliated by losing to the younger filly. But his look was quickly replaced by one of awe.
“WOW! You can see so far!”
“I know! Look! I can see the ocean!”
“I want to see the ocean…I think that’s where my old band was…I'll start my band there. You can be my lead mare!” Shadow said excitedly.
“In your dreams!” The filly bit him and started speeding down the hill again. “Though I wouldn’t really mind,” she thought to herself.

Sheik retreated back, farther into the shadows of a great tree nearby, comfortably ignoring the glares of the furious mare not far from him. He couldn't decide if he liked her or not. On the one hoof, she was drop-dead gorgeous, a gem any stallion would kill to have in his herd, not to mention she was fiery as an active volcano, figuratively spitting lava. However, it was that fiery nature which made him dislike her. Why, oh why did she have to be so difficult? Why couldn't she just admit defeat and follow him, she could leave one day, after all, so why all the drama. The blood bay shook his head, half in befuddlement, half in drowsiness. Today had been quite something in its events and now was entirely the wrong moment to try to begin to understand the other species with whom he shared the island with: mares.
The little stallion relaxed, sneezing a couple times or so as the night came on and ignoring the familiar numbing cold as he grew used to it as quickly as he was shocked by it. The crickets began to chirp and the moon began to rise as Sheik's head dropped to ground level and he drifted off, into sleep.
A moment later, it seemed, he awoke again only now it was colder and more quiet, except for a low growling noise. Alarmed by the sound, Sheik jerked his head up, scanning the ground in front of him in search of the noise, then he thought of another possibility as he craned his head around to look at wear the mare was sleeping.
There, not far from her, there was a large, hungry-looking cougar. A low growling noise came from its feline throat and its eyes glowed a shocking teal color in the lack of daylight. In between its growls, Sheik's sharp Arab ears detected hungry sniffing and then silence. A silence which stretched horribly until his eyes discerned something even more terrifying the the ravenous carnivore: the beast was hardly eight feet away from the sleeping mare, who would not be able to move because of her injury.
Sheik opened his mouth to warn her of his presence, but feared that the sound would alert the beast, besides that, he didn't even know the mare's name and he himself was terrified beyond belief.
Working against his fear, he hesitantly stepped over the circle of rocks which separated him from the other equine. Despite his fear of the sound alerting the monster, he spoke quietly, his voice barely louder than a whisper.
"Mare, mare," He started urgently, but in a suppressed voice. "Mare, don't move a muscle."

“Shadow!” Jewel shouted as she woke from her pleasant sleep. She willed herself not to cry. No. She never cried. She had never cried in her whole life, even though she felt like it every single time she woke. She must have gone through every “If only…” known to earth. If only I had never lived…Shadow…why can’t you come back…
Suddenly, Jewel’s ears flicked back. What was that sound? Slow breathing…that wasn’t from a horse. Oh no…not…she had only faced one when she was barely three weeks old…not again…not the memories…
Hot breath…smell of rotting meat…sounds of the storm above…
“JEWEL! Don’t wor-“
The sound of claws upon hide…scent of horse flesh…fangs ripping…
Jewel was petrified, but she couldn’t show her fear.

Sheik himself was frozen with fear at the prospect of fighting off a full grown cougar with little or no help from the injured mare, but he stood his ground, refusing to bolt in fear. To bolt would be wise, sensible. He would only be following his instincts, but it would not be right. No, to leave her to certain death would be wrong of him and even though he didn't know it then, if he ran now he would never forgive himself.
'Don't move a muscle." He repeated in the same sub-dued voice, although his tone shook in fear as he slowly paced a hoof upon the dirt and out his weight down upon it. He was walking out to meet the monster, ready to take him on. It was a very foolish and brave thing to do. What on earth were the odds of a horse, an Arabian no less, winning against a powerful, hungry cougar. They were so slim that perhaps it was better they weren't even thought about.
She scared stallion took another step out into the more open ground, his ears pinned flat against his skull, his mouth wide, allowing for his teeth to be bared. He was terrified and his stomach felt ready to turn over at any moment, but he went forward, feeling oddly numb and stiff with fright.

Black Jewel’s ears swiveled, and the whites showed in her eyes. She started to pull on her lips, hoping the showing of her teeth would threaten the cougar. She whipped her tail quickly to try and intimidate it. Her ears were pinned down. She hissed at it, willing with all her heart to make it go away. She wished she could fight it, bring it down, honor Shadow’s memory. She didn’t dare blink, for she knew any closing of her eyes would flash to her images of That Day. She tried to stand, moving her hooves ever so slightly. Energy was in her body but her muscles couldn’t lift her.

"I said don't move a muscle!" Sheik called out, annoyed that she had disobeyed, but it was too late, the cougar had leapt out at the mare, the battle was on.
As the predator went for the mare, Sheik took a few half galloping, half trotting steps, toward the enemy and lunged out with his front hoof, but he missed as he attempted to split the animal's flesh open with the sharp edge, worn down by almost constant movement. Alas, for this stallion was not experienced enough yet to understand that a pathetic little stroke with one hoof was not enough to gain a hungry predator's attention and especially to take it away from being focused on a potential meal. As his first attempt didn't work, he edged closer to the beast and struck out again, this time uttering a loud squeal as he did so.
In this instance, his hoof did make considerable contact with the animal, but it did not harm him, however it did gain his attention, a stupid and brave thing to do as the mountain brute turned its hungry stare on him instead. It was true that he preferred the aspect of the wounded mare, he would not have to work for his dinner that way, but the constant interrupts of the young stallion would get rather annoying, bothersome, like a fly which won't leave a panting dog alone so the beast turned to the stallion, intending to get rid of him first so that he could eat his meal in peace.

“Listen, cougar,” Black Jewel breathed with malice, “if you think you’re getting an east supper, you’re greatly mistaken.” Black Jewel felt a warmth inside of her, though she didn’t know where it came from. All she knew is that she imagined it as a blue roan.
She summoned up all the strength she had in her, and then pushed it all into her legs. With great work, she forced herself to stand. Within seconds she masked the fact that she had been wobbling, though she innerly felt like crumbling. No one was going to see her pain.
Ears were laid back, hooves extended, eyes flashing red, and Black Jewel was ready for whatever was coming at her.

With great difficulty, Sheik refrained from rolling his equine eyes. What on earth did she think she was doing? For the love of peace, why couldn’t she just lie still and let him deal with it? Well, he couldn’t exactly deal with the beast, but her standing up and trying to defend herself certainly did not make his job any easier. In fact, she had just made it considerable more complicated.
”He can’t understand you mare!” He yelled in his frustration. ”All he understands are the bloody wounds on your coat glistening with ready-to-devour meat; he doesn’t understand your words!” However, he half knew that his words would more than likely have little or no effect on her. The problem with her was that she didn’t listen to a word he or anyone else said and even according to her story; it had gotten her into trouble even then.
Since this lovely dispositionated mare was being oh so helpful, Sheik knew that he was going to have to deal with their enemy himself and he had best do it quickly as the mare looked ready to throw herself at him, sink those broken legs into his chest, and mightily crush him to death---all without a scratch on her part, never mind the fact that she severely injured. His next motion was both brave and stupid. In a leap from a near stand-still he charged, head first, into the beast’s upper neck. At last, their enemy noticed the blood bay stallion and he let out a deafening roar before he turned to sink his fangs into Sheik’s chest.

Black Jewel let out a hard whinny, mists clouding her eyes. Red was the opposite of blue, so why was she seeing blue? Why couldn’t…then in her mind a memory returned, and she couldn’t hold it back.
“JEWEL!” And there was Whispers of a Shadow, looking so beautiful in that moment of idiotic bravery, shining a blue-tinted grey that had ebony bits at the face an the legs. Why couldn’t he have stayed behind and let the cougar have it meal of her? Why did he have to be so foolhardy?
The cougar snarled, amber eyes now fixated on Shadow, the color of dark sunshine, a pure picture of verocity. It wasn’t its fault, Jewel knew. It had to eat, but why couldn’t it move on to some other foals?
Shadow reared up and neighed what was supposed to be mightily, but as a young colt, it only sounded comical. It was a high-pitched melody of fury. His eyes stared into the cougar’s eyes, and the cougar coiled up. Black Jewel couldn’t bare to watch. She closed her eyes.
And then it came, the sound of claws upon hide, a sound that would rip its way into the inner workings of her mind and would haunt her nightmares. An awful, tearing noise, that seemed to tear away her life. Then there was the smell, the metallic, putrid, open smell. She didn’t recognize it, but she knew it to be blood. She opened her eyes.
There was Shadow, on the ground, flesh exposed at the neck. He was barely breathing. Oh Shadow, poor, courageous, stupid shadow. His last great effort to the world was a whisper.
“Run, my Jewel.”
Black Jewel couldn’t bare to hear it any longer, and ripped herself away from it. Here was reality, again, facing her with almost the same thing. Except she didn’t love this stallion, though she wasn’t entirely sure whether she had loved Shadow. Had she? It was too painful for her to even think his name. But it wasn’t going to happen again, she wasn’t going to let another stallion die to save her.
She summoned up more strength and reared up as high as she could go, ignoring all the pain, and letting out a whinny.
