For once, Sunstone didn’t say the first thing that popped into his mind, which was undoubtedly rude. “I…” He suddenly stopped himself before he said, ‘I didn’t think so either.’ He shook his head in disgust at the thought. Of course he didn’t care! He told himself that ten times just to make sure. He returned to finish his sentence, but with a different ending, “I like to fight.” The inner part of him told him he was taking that cowards way out, the majority of him told him he was taking the truthful way. He shuffled his weight from foot to foot, wondering whether he should leave now, or stay in case the cougar came back. That small part of him sighed, but thought they were making progress.

Figures, she thought bitterly and finished cleaning her cuts. "Well, either way," she said softly. "Thanks for fighting him off. I was lucky to just get it off my back," she said shaking her head. She hated feeling so weak that she couldn't even defend herself, but she shook her head as if shaking the thoughts away. The next thing she said was also hard and also made her feel weak. "I don't suppose you could stay?" she asked softly. "At least until morning...in case it comes back?"

“If I have to stay here I may as well do something useful.” He paused to gaze around. “You can go to sleep if you want to. I’ll keep watch.” He locked his legs so he wouldn’t fall over, just in case. He was tired, but he would stay up. Because no matter how cynical he was, he kept his promises.
The stars were beginning to come out, and the stallion recalled his first good memory of childhood, after a day of hard training, he had looked into the night sky and seen what was commonly known as a shooting star. For the first time in a long time, he smiled, looking at the stars with fondness.

Crimson bobbed her head in a nod of understanding and thanks. It took all the rest of her self control not hurl herself to the ground but instead lower herself in a graceful and dignified manner. As she looked up at him from the ground she was certain that she could see something she could have called fondness in his eyes. Her ears were pricked curiously, but she didn't ask any questions. She didn't want to seem nosy and besides, she was to tired to stay awake through any lengthy explanations. She heaved a sigh and then lowered her head and was asleep within moments.
((So shall we skip to morning or did you have more to add to the night time place?))

Sunstone turned his head to glance at the mare sleeping peacefully, and something entered him that had never been there before. A sense of responsibility. What was weirder, was that he liked it. He wondered if this was how band stallions felt but he never bothered to answer his own question. He scanned the land around himself, and seeing nothing was there, and nobody was there to watch him, he silently reared, his hooves stretching out as if reaching for the sky, and that was, in fact, what he was doing. Of course he had never succeeded, but he always tried, every night, ever since he had seen that shooting star, those many years ago. When his hooves came down on the earth again, he regained his dignified composure. (You can have it be morning after this, if you want to)

As the first rays of sunlight peeked over the horizon, Crimson slept on. But once the rays hit her face, her eyes slowly opened and she found herself no longer able to sleep. She lifted her head and looked around, blinking sleep from her eyes and wondering if the stallion was still there or if he had left her in the night. She slowly and somewhat clumsily stood up sending bits of dead leaves and grass falling from her pelt as she did so. She shook her mane and looked around, hoping that he was still there. She'd made it safely through the night so that means he stayed with her, right?

All through the night, Sunstone had only had light dozes that lasted only minutes, so when the sunlight hit him, he was still quite tired. He lowered his muzzle to graze on some of the new grass, touched with crystal drops of dew. All night he had heard nothing, so he guessed that there had only been one cougar, and that it had been scared. He wondered when he’d e able to return to his land, or if he would at all. Maybe he would go somewhere else instead, a forest perhaps, or maybe the shore. He had always liked the ocean. It always seemed to him that the stars were brighter there. Still, he wouldn’t leave until the mare had woken up and was well enough to be on her own.

A slight smile crossed Crimson's muzzle as she spotted the stallion nearby. So he had stayed after all, how nice. She slowly walked over until she stood beside him. "Did you get any sleep at all?" she asked. She felt a little guilty as she realized that she'd slept soundly all through the night while he stayed up to keep watch. It seemed kind of selfish. "If you're tired, maybe you should sleep some before you go back to wherever it is you live," she suggested with a swish of her tail.

“I’m…I’m fine. Thank you for asking.” Had he…had he just been polite? “I’m used to not getting much sleep, my father made me when I was young.” He looked on forward, as if trying hard not to look back. His legs shook a little, he guessed it was from standing so long.
“Are you…uh…well rested?” he put forward meekly, determinedly staring at the ground. Her forelock was slightly wet, and he guessed it was from dew. Had he really been standing that still? He tried to recall why, but his memory wouldn’t bring it up.

"Yes, I'm rested, but I feel kind of bad having you stay up all night while I slept," Crimson said, offering a small smile. For some reason he didn't seem as edgy as he was when he first came over asking if she'd live through the night. I'm probably just imagining it, she thought shaking her head slightly as the words he'd spoken echoed through her mind again. And if you haven’t noticed, I’m as bitter as I’m going to get and its not going to change anytime soon! No matter how hard you try, I’ll remain the same. I don’t have a heart, so don’t try to grow me one.
"Well, I suppose you want me to leave now, don't you?" she asked, a hint of regret lacing her voice. She silently cursed herself and hoped that he hadn't picked up on it.

“You can stay here all you want, it is for me to leave,” he paused, not thinking of what else to say. “I…have a home in the mountains, at the very top. It’s called Starry Peak.” He cleverly left out that he’d named it; he didn’t want anyone to know about his love for stars. “And…” What was he trying to say? Even he didn’t know, and he seemed incapable to say it. He looked back at her and immediately wished he hadn’t, so he turned his head back and stared directly ahead, eyes never blinking. Why was it easier to look away?

"Well, just from the name it sounds like a nice place," Crimson said cheerily. "Do you like living there?" she asked. In the moment he had looked back at her, she'd tried to make eye contact but was sure that she'd been to slow. She waited for a moment, pausing to see if he was going to finish his sentence. "And...?" she prompted after the silence had hung in the air for a few moments. She looked at him curiously, thingying her head to one side slightly. She took a step forward, her face still bearing the same curious expression. "What is it?" she asked softly.

“Uh…yes, I like living there,” he tried quickly, “It gets pretty rough sometimes. All the rocks are pretty hard on one’s hooves, but um, the view’s great,” he added, continuously looking ahead. “And the trip there is pretty rough also.” He started shuffling his hooves, but a crack in a branch he had stepped on snapped him out of his temporary hypnotism, for which he couldn’t understand the meanings. “I doubt you could get to the top?” he said lazily, brandishing the words casually.

She snorted indignantly. "I bet I could," she countered and then shrugged, turning her head away. "Not like it matters. You probably wouldn't want me tagging along anyways. I somehow just don't see you as the friendly type," she said and then looked back to the back of his head. "Though you are an interesting horse to talk to. Frustrating sometimes, yes, but interesting nonetheless."
She shifted her weight while waiting for a reply. I wonder if I could make it to the top, she began thinking. I've never even seen his home before...what if it is steeper than I imagine. Oh well, I can't take back my words now. She smiled slightly and shook the biting flies from her mane and neck.

“If you wanted me to leave, you could’ve just said so. I need an early start anyway, if I want to be at the top by nightfall.” He snorted and turned in the other direction, to stare at the forest that stood about 100 meters in front of him. He lifted a foreleg, but he didn’t make a step. He turned his head and pretended to look for the direction for the mountain, though he knew perfectly well where it was. He saw the tall mountain north and right of him, beyond the line of the forest. He lifted a foot again and made another attempt to walk, but his other three legs were rooted to the ground.
