 The Scent of something...

Etta cantered smoothly through the lands, her legs seeming to bring her higher and higher into the lands that she didn't yet know. It had been a long time since she had ever been in a herd, in fact never even though she was nearly 9 years old. She continued her smooth canter, daggers hitting the ground in the quick three beat gate as she soon found herself in the middle of a vast land. She could smell a stallion, but it was faint, perhaps one had passed through here. But curiosity drove her to ignore it. She soaring expanse of the land around her hand all but consumed her mind. She felt gay and young again. Quickly she turned, finding a winding path that seemed to carry up into the heavens, an adventure this would be! Her powerful Holstinier legs carried her forward up the mountain, lifting to jump over logs, she simply had to find the top, watch where the water fell to the ground, it was wondrous and she was determined to explore it.

Powerful, lithe, chivalrous. These were all adjectives which could be used to describe that mighty Holsteiner who lived near the falls. His coat was black as the darkest night and his eyes were as deep as a midnight pool. His withers rose to a loft height of 17.0 hands high, which, for a Holsteiner, wasn't all that big. His muscles rippled underneath that slick, glossy coat and his loins moved back and forth ever so slightly, in time with the rhythm of his walk. He was not seen frequently, so many might call him a phantom, a rare sight, yet he lived on like any normal horse, only he mostly kept to himself and his brother, Lightning Bolt.

Thunder was a picky stallion, polite, but picky. He had not yet found the right mare for him and although he was romantic, he believed strongly in soul mates for life, to put it in a cheesy way.

Sensitive black eyes were pricked as they caught the sound of cantering hooves approaching, First they were cantering, then there was a pause and then they resumed their cantering once more as they hit the ground, two at once after the short pause. It was clear to the Warmblood that this approaching equine was jumping, over what, he knew not, but he knew he was coming. He raised his head and put his weight on both legs, as he had previously been resting on three, head raised, standing proud, he uttered a quiet snort to great the newcomer.

Her dark pillars halted, daggers digging into the earth as a sound echoed around her. It was hard to tell the source of it or where the source was but one thing was clear, it was no mare.

Quickly though she would have to take action, if she stood too long with out responding she may be deemed a harmful trespasser, and apparently she was already on another's land. So she turned her muzzle away from the wind and into the valley before letting out a responding call.

With all luck the stallion below would not harm her, or worse. Though she allowed the troublesome thoughts to enter her crown she did not let them change her heart. Instead Etta remained calm, collected and aware, for the next few moments could change her life, for better or for worse.

It came to him, on the back of the wind, a mare's call, he could tell by the pitch of the wind. He wasn't one for calling back and forth to one he couldn't see, but he had heard others do it before. To him, it just didn't seem natural; it felt modern and awkward for an equine like him to perform, but never the less he stood there for a minute, considering the call, before he raised his own head and let out a shorter call, slightly more quiet than hers, back across the space to wherever she was, this unseen mare.

Another long moment passed for Thunder after his call, in which he just stood there, considering his options. He could descend and take a look at whoever was down before, at what kind of pretty filly had come to his doorstep. After all, he was master of his domain and a formidable stallion to boot, powerful, and skilled in combat. Even if the mare below had malicious intent, he had a fair chance of sub dueing her.

So, he started down the slope at a working walk, his entire body engaged as he made his way down his hill to greet the newcomer and to question her of her reason to be on his land. When he had reached the foot of the slope, he broke into a trot as he ventured out onto his land, picking up a scent as he did so and using it as his guide to finding her.

When the call was returned she looked to the far side of the valley, he had been above her, though both were higher than the ground of grass below them. Thoughts ran through her head for a moment, would be he a kind stag or an evil brute who sought nothing but the use of her wares. But soon enough she had no choice but to confront him as soon a large black stallion appeared, contrasting the rich green ground below her. He gave a great sigh to herself, the climb of her explorations would have to be halted. Her hind pillars turned her large body back again in decent and she ventured out onto the grass at quick trot causing her banner to sway this way and that as she moved towards the stallion, interested to see just what would happen.

He halted as a mare came into view. Compared to his height, she wasn’t very big, and certainly not tall for the withers of a Warmblood, which he knew she was. Indeed, he could tell a horse’s breed before they themselves declared it. Or at least the general category they were from if they were not of a common breed. Standing more than twenty feet away from the mare, but he stretched his neck forward, extending his muzzle and blowing warily in greeting. Then, carefully, he raised one hoof off the ground and started toward her.

”Hello, what be your business here, mare?” He asked her in a polite tenor voice. His deep, dark eyes swept over the other equine, taking in her appearance and her face. She did not seem old or young, but in her prime, unlike him, as he was still a young horse at five years of age. He halted again, not ten feet from her, still wary of what she could be, of who she was in league with.

The pillars that ad minutes ago carried her curiosity up into the heavens now stopped upon the ground. Though she wasn't small compared to most, standing at 16 hands other Holsteiners were still often larger than her, especially stallions, this brute was no exception. The deep eyes attached to his body swiveled over her, taking in her wrapping and breed. He seemed young still though, his greeting cheerful and unseasoned. Still, she could not lie and say that his midnight coat was not something to gaze at. But he was young still after all, the world had not sullied his hide and mind and turned it with the wheel of time.

None of that was her affair though, what she was faced with was the question before her. What is your business here? Well in all fact she didn't know, but that little matter wasn't allowed to creep onto her face, and only a small pause of time was the evidence of her thinking. " Well sir, I was about to embark to explore the catacombs of this land above us, but it appears to be in your territory. " she said unwillingly letting her annoyance of stopping her journey stick behind in her mind. It was not her business to poke fun at a young stallion who had the foresight to claim land early in his years.

Yet still, her eyes could not help but dart away from his form as she again took in the marvel of the land around her. The waterfalls creating harmony with the tone of their crashing, the birds twittering past to create the melody, yes all in all this land was indeed something the marvel at, the only thing standing in her way of exploring it was this stag, who could very well hurt her if he wanted.
